PACT HIGHLY COMMENDED IN CHARITY AWARDS 2008

pact has secured a coveted 'Highly Commended' Award in this year's prestigious Charity Awards.

"This is the first time we have ever entered, and so to have been shortlisted and achieved this quality mark is a great boost for our hard-working and talented staff and volunteers", said Andy Keen-Downs, the charity's Director.

pact was shortlisted for its work to develop a social enterprise culture, and in particular, for its 'pact lunch' prison catering scheme.

The scheme has enabled the charity to develop partnerships with prisons to improve facilities for children and families visiting relatives in prison.

At some prisons, valuable work experience is being provided to prisoners who it is hoped will then gain employment in the catering industry on release from prison.

"We're keen to build on this success and we are now interested in looking at how we can develop our partnership with HM Prison Service to provide more work and training opportunities for prisoners, and also to encourage healthy eating, particularly for prisoners' children", said Alexandra Wakefield, pact's Head of Social Enterprise.
